training in-hand

"Enhancing any relationship between horse and rider starts on the ground"

Working in-hand builds a deeper connection between horse and handler, developing balance, suppleness and trust without the weight of the rider. These classical methods  strengthen the horse physically and mentally while laying the foundations for a calm, confident horse ready to work under saddle, while also building the confidence of the rider.

I use gentle communication through body language, voice and clear cues to guide horses in a way they understand.

In-hand training is especially valuable for:

  • Young horses - beginning their education
  • Horses in rehabilitation or returning to work
  • Improving straightness , engagement or lightness
  • Building confidence in nervous or sensitive horses

The ABC's of horsemanship are the foundation of trust, connection and building confidence.

  • My space - your space - establishing boundaries and trust
  • Follow me - encouraging connection and responsiveness
  • Lateral work - developing suppleness and balance

  •  Fun Games - keeping learning positive and engaging.

Next Steps - as trust and understanding grow we progress to next steps that deepen confidence  and prepare the horse and rider for more advanced work.

  • Flags - building confidence
  • Poles - rhythm, suppleness and strength
  • Collection - develop balance and lightness
  • Calm
  • Straight
  • Forward

Whether starting a young horse or progressive training for advanced horses, these exercises form the foundation of a horses education and provide the conditions to having a horse that is calm, confident and trusting in any situation or event. They also support develop good posture and muscle development, much like a Pilates style workout designed to enhance long-term soundness and performance.
